This breed is challenging while domestication and can only afford other pets if grown from their puppyhood together. The Chinese dog Shar-Pei is scowling but affectionate. Gentle and soft temperament with children is well appreciated but young kids may tease the dog with their rowdy and rough play which may result in an unpleasant reaction. It is immense requirement to socialize the Shar-Pei from its early puppyhood for supportive and cooperative attitudes. Non-canine pets should be avoided as the dog is sharp hunter of such animals. They tend to chase small animals even pets. They require handsome amount of exercises for physical satisfaction. Coat care is minimal but wrinkles on face need attention. Although tough yet trainable for conformation, tacking, agility and obedience, the Shar-Pei needs a committed, consistent and devoted trainer. Shar-Pei Health Issues

The Chinese Shar-Pei dogs are prone to kidney failure resulting in a fever and swollen hocks syndrome. Shar-Pei dogs have skin problems, but it is not because the dog has wrinkles, rather a congenital disease. However, if you buy puppies from a reputable breeder, this issue will not arise. Some have been reported of mast cell tumors but such cases are very rare.

Shar-Pei Training

Its stubborn and self-sufficient traits are the causes of being tough in training; the dog tends to ignore the commands of its master when anything goes against its decision. The dog is also not attracted by rewarded deals of repast. Consistency is the best policy which off-course requires good deal of patience and dedication. First time dog owner would not be able to overwhelm the issues and may spoil the dog’s temperaments. Human should always dominate the dog to realize that human is the pack leader and should be obeyed. Generally true for all dogs, the most behavioral issues arise due to lacks in training, ideally handler is responsible to formulate required qualities.

Shar-Pei Exercise

Highly energetic and lively, Shar-Pei requires to be satisfied by its physical exertion to stay calm. Remember an unsatisfied dog would become destructive. Burning of energy is also necessary to overcome its tendency to get fat and clumsy. Accompany them on long walks or plan interactive games and share vigorous play sessions. The dog would give you healthy competitions in running and jogging besides energetic plays.

Shar-Pei Care and Grooming

The dog is very sleek and tidy except the folded skin wrinkles on face which are to be checked regularly for hygienic cleanliness. Some of the Shar-Pei dogs slobber especially when injured or feeling pain. Occasional brushing usually once a week is good enough for its grooming. Against its emergent popularity the demand was increased and the dog was bred at huge scale heedlessly. This factor is to be considered when adapting its puppies.
