Shar-Pei Temperament

Alert and independent, this dog is extremely devoted, loyal and protective breed. This dog enjoys the company of human rather than the company of animals. The Chinese Shar-Pei was a fighting dog at its early age, the dog is adapted as companion currently but still holds its fighting traits. Keep them satisfied with their physical exercises and socialize well in its early stage to build calm state of mind. The dog affords cold season quite well but hot summer is tough for him. Shar-Pei is prone to heatstroke and should be placed in well ventilated, open spaces but under shad. Do not expose to direct sunlight in summer. The Chinese dog Shar-Pei is affectionate with children of family but of older ages, however, the dog should be governed when interacting with young kids because they may tease the dog with their rowdy and rough play. The breed is aggressive to dogs and cats; it is mandatory to socialize the Shar-Pei from its early puppyhood to retain harmony and tranquility in the house. Non-canine pets should not be kept with them as these dogs are sharp hunter of such animals. The Shar Pei breed is sleek and requires very less to remain groomed. Extensive barking, chewing and digging are the behavioral issues seldom raised due to unsatisfied physical exercises. They need vigorous efforts to stimulate their physical and mental organs. You can have a calm Shar-Pei in your house if you managed its exercise requirements.

Shar-Pei with children and other pets

This protective breed is bonded with affection and care with family. The breed is enormously concerned to family’s security and safety. They have gentle tendencies towards children. This dog is proven best companion of children of 8 years age and above. Young kids can also share some activities with dogs but should be supervised. This dog possesses relatively low tolerance against childish pulling, snatching and other rowdy plays. During socialization, teach your children for correct handling of dogs as well. To establish peace in home environment, all pets of the house including Shar-Pei should be adapted in very early age and all should be raised together. They have high aggression towards strange dogs while affordable with already introduced dogs at home. Other canine and non-canine pet including free wandering cats should not be trusted with this breed.
